When you think of Memorial Day, what do you think of?

Do you think of backyard barbeques? Long weekends? Time with friends and family? While there is nothing wrong with any of those things, it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of the meaning of the holiday, and why we celebrate it.

In the beginning, Memorial Day was called “Decoration Day”. It was set aside as a day of remembrance for those that died in our nation’s service. While many towns may have had their own “custom” for honoring those that perished in service, Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan. The first observance of Memorial Day was May 30th, 1868. Flowers were placed on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The first state to celebrate Memorial Day was New York.

While normally celebrated on May 30th, in 1971 under the “National Holiday Act”, it was moved to the last Monday in May (this made sure that federal workers had a three day holiday).

If you have an American Flag, Memorial Day is a great day to display it. From morning until noon, the flag should be at half staff, then after noon, raised to full staff.

So in between bites of hot dogs or hamburgers, take some time to reflect on those who so bravely served our country and gave you the opportunity to have this three day weekend!

And if you can…fly the flag!
